Did you know that 60 percent of Americans use some form of social media, and that most of them also interact with various companies on social media websites? And, a quarter of them do so more than once a week.

Moreover, a 2008 study found that 93 percent of social media users think that companies should have a social media presence–and 85 percent think that those companies should also interact with their potential customers.

And, even better, half of these potential customers feel more connected to companies who do so.

So, besides getting a Facebook fan page and a Twitter account, what can companies do to more actively interact with their potential customers through social networking?

Two words: Start Blogging.

What is a blog?

A blog is, in it’s most simple form, an online journal. In fact, the term comes from early internet lingo–a slurred, shortened form of the phrase “web log.” Blog owners post journal type entries or short articles, often containing links to other relevant information (like your company’s products or services, for example.)

Readers often comment on blog posts, allowing blog owners to respond to and continue the conversation.

What Should I Write About?

Company based blogs should focus on topics that are at least loosely related to their type of product or service. This will help to attract the type of customers who want or need what you have to offer.

So, for example, if your company sells gourmet cookware and supplies, your blog might include recipes and ideas (which, conveniently, can link to products on your website that might help the reader to prepare the food you describe.)

How often should I post?

This depends. You should never post more than once a day–but you don’t have to post every day. Ideally, post at least two to three times each week, and be sure to monitor your comments. This way, you can respond in a timely fashion to legitimate comments and delete worthless spam immediately.

The key is consistency. Set a schedule for your corporate blog and stick to it.

What if I don’t have time to maintain a blog?

If you are too busy to handle a blog, you’re not alone. Many business owners share your plight.  So what’s the answer?

Hire a professional freelance writer to do it for you. You’ll save time and your company will still reap the benefits of having its own blog.  Many freelancers will even ghost blog on your behalf–so that, as far as your customers are concerned, the blog appears to be written by you.
